HETAS Certified Installer in Chadwell Heath. Stove installation, chimney lining and twin wall flue systems. Liner diameter specified to Approved Document J on every installation.
Chadwell Heath sits on the western edge of Havering, bordering Redbridge and close to the Barking and Dagenham boundary. The housing stock runs from Victorian terrace through to 1930s semi and post-war residential. Original wide open-fire chimneys are common in older properties on and around Chadwell Heath High Road and Marks Gate. These chimneys typically require a liner installation to the correct diameter before a stove can be fitted and certified. We assess at survey, specify the liner, and carry out both liner and stove installation as a single scoped job.
HETAS registered installer, HETAS approved installer, HETAS certified installer — these three terms all refer to the same registration under the HETAS Competent Person Scheme. If you have searched for any of these terms, you are in the right place.
Liner diameter is specified in Approved Document J of the Building Regulations because the consequences of getting it wrong are both a performance problem and a safety risk. The diameter determines the volume of gas the liner can carry at a given draw. An undersized liner restricts the volume of combustion gas that can exit the appliance, causing back-pressure, poor draw, and potentially smoke spillage into the room. An oversized liner carries the gas at a lower velocity and temperature, leading to condensation within the liner, tar formation, and over time acid attack to the masonry surrounding it.
The correct diameter is not a matter of installer preference — it is derived from the appliance specification and the appliance outlet diameter. Most standard wood burning stoves have a 150mm (6 inch) flue outlet, requiring a 150mm liner. DEFRA-approved stoves with a 5-inch outlet may permit a 125mm or 130mm liner, but only where the appliance approval specifically confirms this. Open fires require a minimum 200mm liner under solid fuel. Gas fires have their own minimum, typically 180mm. Where an existing liner of an incorrect diameter is already in the chimney, the liner must be replaced to the correct specification before a HETAS compliance certificate can be issued. We establish the correct diameter at survey and confirm it in the job specification before any material is ordered or installation work begins.

Does liner diameter matter for a stove installation in Chadwell Heath?
Yes. Liner diameter is a building regulation requirement under Approved Document J. The correct diameter depends on the appliance type and its flue outlet. An undersized liner restricts draw; an oversized liner causes condensation and tar. We establish the correct specification at survey before any installation is agreed.
My chimney was lined years ago — does it still need to be checked?
Yes. If you are fitting a different appliance from the one the liner was originally sized for, the liner diameter may no longer be correct. If the liner is old enough that its condition is uncertain, a smoke soundness test before the new installation confirms whether it is still gas-tight.
