HETAS Approved Installer in Chigwell and Hainault. Stove installation, chimney lining and twin wall flue systems. CO alarm confirmed on every installation. Compliance certificate on the day.
Chigwell and Hainault are at the southwest of our territory, straddling the Essex-London boundary. Chigwell itself carries substantial detached properties, many with original brick chimney stacks in good order. Hainault is more densely residential — a mix of post-war estate housing and 1930s semis, a proportion of which were built with chimneys. For properties in both areas without a useable chimney, twin wall is a common solution. We survey both villages and handle the full scope from survey through to compliance certificate.
HETAS registered installer, HETAS approved installer, HETAS certified installer — these three terms all refer to the same registration under the HETAS Competent Person Scheme. If you have searched for any of these terms, you are in the right place.
Approved Document J of the Building Regulations requires a carbon monoxide alarm in every room that contains a solid fuel appliance. The alarm must meet British Standard BS EN 50291. This requirement applies to every new stove installation. It is not advisory — it is a building regulation. A HETAS installer cannot issue a compliance certificate for an installation where a conforming CO alarm has not been confirmed as present and correctly positioned.
Carbon monoxide is produced by incomplete combustion. A well-installed, well-maintained stove in a correctly specified flue produces very little under normal operating conditions. The risk arises when something goes wrong: a blocked or deteriorated flue, an appliance fault, or an air supply problem. Under those conditions, CO can accumulate in the room at concentrations that are dangerous before any occupant is aware of the problem. CO is colourless, odourless and acts quickly at sufficient concentration. The alarm is the only reliable detection method.
We confirm the presence of a conforming CO alarm at every installation in Chigwell and Hainault. Where a suitable alarm is not already in place, we supply and fit one to the correct standard and position it to current guidance before the commissioning test and certificate issue. The alarm position is noted on the compliance certificate. If you have an existing stove in a property you have purchased and you are uncertain whether a CO alarm is fitted, this is worth checking independently of any installation work — it is a legal requirement that applies to any room with a solid fuel appliance, not only to new installations.

Is a carbon monoxide alarm required by law when a stove is installed?
Yes. Approved Document J requires a carbon monoxide alarm to be present in every room with a solid fuel appliance. The alarm must meet BS EN 50291. A HETAS installer confirms the alarm is fitted before issuing the compliance certificate. We supply and fit the alarm where one is not already present.
Where should a CO alarm be positioned in relation to a stove?
The alarm should be on the ceiling or high on the wall in the same room as the appliance, no more than 3 metres from the appliance, and not directly above it. We position every CO alarm to the current guidance at the time of installation and confirm the position on the compliance certificate.
